• Patrice Lumumba, a nationalist leader, co-founded the Mouvement National Congolais (MNC), the Democratic Republic of the Congo's first trans-ethnic political party. • Inspired by Kwame Nkrumah's success in Ghana, Lumumba led mass agitations and boycotts against Belgian colonial rule. • Following a landslide victory in the May 1960 general elections, the 34-year-old Lumumba became the DRC’s first democratically elected Prime Minister.
