He had spent months in custody following a confusing encounter with local law enforcement, then was released – alone, in the cold – far from the Rohingya community hub where he might have found help. On Monday, a public inquiry will reopen, nine years after the plan was proposed and a toxic local battle beganWhen Fidelma O’Kane retired more than a decade ago from her career as a social worker and lecturer, she thought she would be “travelling and having a glass of wine and eating chocolate and reading books” while based in the quiet, hilly corner of rural County Tyrone where she has lived almost all her life.It didn’t quite work out that way. Instead, an idle remark from a neighbour would set O’Kane on a path that would become an all-consuming mission. A mining company, the neighbour told her, was planning to drill for long-rumoured reserves of gold in the Sperrins, the low peatland mountain range in Northern Ireland where O’Kane’s family has lived for generations. CCTV showed three people setting light to an ambulance in Golders Green in the early hours of Monday morningAn attack on four Jewish community ambulances was aimed at making British Jews “be less visible” and “fear going about” their lives, Wes Streeting said as he pledged extra health support.Speaking at the scene of the attack in north London, the health secretary said:The aim of these attackers is clear. They want Jewish people in this country to live smaller lives, to live less Jewish lives, to be less visible as Jewish people, to fear going about Jewish life.I know that the Jewish community will not be cowed by this despicable act of evil, but it is the responsibility of the rest of us not to be bystanders.Every decent person in this country needs to stand up and speak up against this vile antisemitic hatred. This is a horrific antisemitic attack. And of course my thoughts, I think all of our thoughts, will be with those in the vicinity, the residents who are understandably very concerned, the Jewish community across the country deeply concerned.I’ve already been in touch with community leaders this morning and will continue to do so during the day. Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center has dramatically improved staff retention by reducing nursing turnover from 46% to approximately 4% through enhanced recruitment and community engagement strategies, as reported by CEO Rodney Reider on March 14, 2026. The health system hired 93 new providers and 40 additional nurses while adding nearly 160 beds to expand capacity and reduce emergency department wait times to 11–14 minutes on average. These infrastructure investments include new anesthesia machines, advanced imaging technology, and newly opened Cancer and Cardiovascular Centers, addressing critical workforce challenges that intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic when many nurses pursued travel opportunities. The improvements demonstrate how hospitals can retain staff by reinforcing community connections and workplace belonging beyond physical facilities.
